Mountainscape Vessels
The deep greens of rainforests during monsoon season, and the indigo blue mountains, hazy, fading into the distant sky. My most recent collection, ‘Mountainscapes’ in ‘Indigo’ & ‘Monsoon’, are inspired by the wild and colourful Taiwanese landscape.
Great mountains filled with life and luscious plantations, gorges and precipitous valleys, rugged volcanic coast lines cascading into the sea.
The work makes use of layering, using lines of colour to softly echo these perspectives and depths… conjuring memories of vast mountainous landscapes, their enormity creating moments of tranquility.
The development of this work began during a residency in Taiwan, New Taipei City Yingge Ceramic Museum, during the summer, 2019. Each piece is made in porcelain using a combination of slip casting, jigger jollying and throwing techniques. The coloured stains which create the mountainscapes in indigo blue and monsoon green were collected during my time in Taiwan. With only a glazed interior, the work is fired to 1280° and then lightly hand polished.
